This painting is my tribute to the beautiful flamingos of Jurong Bird Park, capturing a moment before they moved to their new home at Mandai Wildlife Reserve. For so many of us in Singapore, these graceful birds were an iconic part of the park—wading through the water, striking their elegant poses, and adding a splash of pink to our childhood memories.

This is a celebration of those memories—of school trips, family outings, and quiet moments spent admiring these birds. Though Jurong Bird Park has closed its doors and the birds have moved to a new place, its legacy lives on, and this painting is my way of holding onto that special piece of Singapore’s history.

Hui Zhen celebrates the possibility of harmony between nature and urban development in Singapore. The Singapore Flyer stands as a symbol of the city’s progress, yet it invites us to reflect on how nature can coexist within the expanding urban landscape. The great hornbill, perched gracefully on a branch against the backdrop of the Singapore Flyer and the city skyline, symbolizes the resilience of wildlife amidst modern growth.

Through this piece, Hui Zhen encourages us to consider: As Singapore continues to rise, how can we ensure that nature is given the space it needs to thrive alongside our ambition?

Kampung Lorong Buangkok is a rare gem, a slice of old Singapore that has stood the test of time. Established in 1956, it’s home to a close-knit mix of Chinese and Malay residents, living side by side in harmony. Back in the day, it stretched as wide as three football fields, but since the 2000s, high-rise flats in Buangkok Green and Fernvale have gradually taken over the surrounding area. Now, a newly built jogging track wraps around the kampung, almost like a border between the past and the present. Yet, despite the changes, life here remains simple and peaceful—a reminder of the kampung spirit that once defined Singapore

Hui Zhen captures the harmony between nature and urban life in this piece. The hummingbirds soar through an HDB neighborhood, gliding past familiar high-rise blocks. Moving freely through the structured environment, they serve as a reminder that nature is always present, even in the heart of the city. This reflects everyday sights in Singapore—birds perched on window ledges, swooping through corridors, or nesting in hidden corners of the estate. Here, the urban landscape and nature coexist seamlessly, each complementing the other.

Both Kampung co-existed until the mid-eighties in the current Kembangan neighbourhood. Kembangan means “expansion” in Malay. It was one of the most predominantly Malay village with several Chinese families living in it. The main road Jalan Kembangan was named by the villagers during the 1930s and lost its value after the 80s, and now it is being replaced by Sim Avenue East and Changi Road.

Art Sam, as Hui Zhen's art educator, has mentored her in the creation of this artwork.

Otters have a way of capturing our hearts. In Singapore, they’re more than just wildlife—they’re resilient explorers, adapting to our parks and waterways, finding a place in the city’s rhythm. Watching them play and care for one another reminds us that nature isn’t separate from us—it’s right here, coexisting with us.

Through this artwork, Hui Zhen invites us to see this connection. The arched bridge and blooming flowers feel like a warm embrace, reflecting how Singapore has welcomed these spirited creatures. It’s a gentle reminder to slow down, look closer, and appreciate the harmony between nature and city life.
